KB&B, or Kaufmann Bros & Bondy, was an American pipe company established in the mid-19th century, most famous today for having created Kaywoodie. The company originally made pipes under the KB&B name, but their innovative designs and patents soon led them to market several makes under the KB&B umbrella, including Kaywoodie, Yello-Bole, and CPF. Something pipe manufacturers used to do a long time ago – and I mean a long time ago – was to create pipes specifically for graduating classes of colleges. This KB&B was made for someone in the Cornell University class of 1924, which, by my math, makes the pipe around 100 years old. It’s not just any KB&B either. Whoever gifted this will have spent a not insubstantial amount of money, as the pipe itself is one of KB&B’s LondonLike line, which were hand made and featured sterling silver decorations. With all that said, the condition of the pipe is quite remarkable. The silver is a little worn, there are some minor handling marks, and there’s a tiny scratch on the vulcanite stem, but these are not substantial signs of wear by any stretch. I’ve had pipes made within the last four years come to my desk in far worse shape than this. When someone gives you a gift like this, you tend to take good care of it.
